An MC Catcher ─ short for Mobile Communication Catcher ─ is a device that masquerades as a real mobile base station.
These devices downgrade nearby phones into 2G GSM, enabling interception, tracking, and direct attacks on baseband firmware. IMSI catchers, a category of MC catchers, exploit 2G GSM networks to downgrade target devices from 4G or 5G into insecure channels.
Technical Explanation of the MC Catcher Detector
The X-Systems MC Catcher Detector is a multi signal monitoring framework using SDR (Software Defined Radio) or embedded radio scanning hardware.
- It continuously scans broadcast channels

To detect pre-downgrade attempts, the system applies a layered anomaly detection model trained on:
- Radio signature inconsistencies (i.e. fake cell towers)

Unfortunately, 2G GSM lacks modern encryption and authentication mechanisms. This makes it an ideal vector for MC catchers to launch baseband-level attacks.
